Rice County is also a part of this area.
On March 5, 1853, Rice County began.
It was named after a fur trader named Henry Mower Rice, who played an important role in making the Minnesota Territory and in its growth and development afterward.
The county is 516 square miles (1,340 km2) big, with 496 square miles (1,280 km2) of land and 20 square miles (52 km2) of water, or 3.9%.
