The county was established in 1883 and organised the following year.
It is named after George R. Reeves, a Texas state senator and Confederate Army colonel.
It is one of the nine counties that make up West Texas’ Trans-Pecos region.
The Pecos micropolitan statistical area includes Reeves County.
The county has a total area of 2,642 square miles (6,840 km2), of which 6.7 square miles (17 km2) (0.3%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
