Its county seat is in Redwood Falls, which is near where the Redwood River meets the Minnesota River.

It is on the south side of the Minnesota River in Paxton and Sherman townships.

On February 8, 1862, the county was made by the Minnesota Legislature. Redwood Falls was chosen as the county seat.
It got its name from the Redwood River, which flows through the county from west to east.
