The county was named after John Ray, a Missouri state legislator and member of the first state Constitutional Convention, on November 16, 1820.
The county has a total area of 574 square miles (1,490 km2), of which 569 square miles (1,470 km2) is land and 5.4 square miles (14 km2) (0.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
