Rappahannock County is a county in the US state of Virginia.
It is in the northern Piedmont area, right next to Shenandoah National Park.
As of the 2020 Census, there were 7,348 people living there.
Washington is the county seat.
The name “Rappahannock” comes from the Algonquian word lappihanne, which can also be written as “toppehannock” and means “rapidly rising river” or “place where the tide goes out and comes back in.”
The county is a part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV.
The county has a total area of 267.2 square miles (692.0 km2), of which 266.4 square miles (690.0 km2) are land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2) (0.3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
