The county was established in 1876 and incorporated in 1889.
It is named for Confederate brigadier general Horace Randal, who was slain during the Battle of Jenkins Ferry.
The county name differs from his because the law establishing the county misspelt Randal’s name.
Randall County, along with neighbouring Potter County, is included in the Amarillo Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The vast JA Ranch, built by Charles Goodnight and John George Adair and spanning six counties, once controlled land in Randall County.
The county has a total area of 922 square miles (2,390 km2), of which 912 square miles (2,360 km2) is land and 11 square miles (28 km2) (1.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
