The county was named after Alexander Ramsey, the first governor of the Minnesota Territory, and was established in 1849.

Ramsey County is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Combined Statistical Area.

It is Minnesota’s smallest and most densely populated county, as well as one of the most densely populated counties in the country.

The county has a total area of 170 square miles (440 km2), of which 152 square miles (390 km2) is land and 18 square miles (47 km2) (11%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
