The population was 74,591 at the time of the 2020 census.

Beckley is the county seat.

Sir Walter Raleigh County was established in 1850 and is named after him.

Raleigh County is part of the Beckley, West Virginia Combined Statistical Area.

Along the east border of the county, the New River runs northwestward. The county landscape is made up of wooded hills with drainages.

The terrain slopes to the north and west, with the highest point towards the southwest corner at 3,524 feet (1,074 meters) above sea level.

The county is 609 square miles (1,580 km2) in size, with 605 square miles (1,570 km2) of land and 4.0 square miles (10 km2) (0.7%) of water.
