John A. Quitman was Governor of Mississippi from 1835 to 1836 and from 1850 to 1851. The county is named after him.
Quitman County is in the area of Mississippi called the Mississippi Delta.
The county has a total area of 406 square miles (1,050 km2), of which 405 square miles (1,050 km2) are land and 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2) (0.3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
