Putnam County is the Illinois county with the smallest area.

The 2010 census said that there were 6,006 people living there.

Hennepin is the county seat.

The county was made out of Fulton County in 1825.

It was named after General Israel Putnam, who fought in the American Revolution. The Ottawa, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area includes Putnam County.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 172 square miles (450 km2), of which 160 square miles (410 km2) are land and 12 square miles (31 km2) are water, or 7.0%.

It has less land than any other county in Illinois.
