Terry is the county seat.
In 1915, parts of Custer, Dawson, and Fallon counties were taken from other counties to make Prairie County.
The name was chosen in a contest, and it describes the main type of land in the area.
The US Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 1,743 square miles (4,510 km2), of which 1,737 square miles (4,500 km2) are land and 5.8 square miles (15 km2) (0.3%) are water.
