Powell County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 13,129 people living there.
Stanton is the county seat.
Kentucky Governor Lazarus W. Powell made the county on January 7, 1852, from parts of Clark, Estill, and Montgomery counties.
As of 2018, it is no longer a dry county. Powell County is home to the Pilot Knob State Nature Preserve, the Natural Bridge State Resort Park, and the Red River Gorge Geologic Area.
These are three of the most important natural areas and ecotourism spots in Kentucky.
The US Census Bureau says that the county is 180 square miles (470 km2) in size, with 179 square miles (460 km2) of land and 1.1 square miles (2.8 km2) of water (0.6%).
