Amarillo is the county seat.
The county was made in 1876, and in 1887 it was put together.
It is named after Robert Potter, who was a politician, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and the Texas Secretary of the Navy.
Potter County is part of the greater Amarillo area.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 922 square miles (2,390 km2), of which 14 square miles (36 km2) (1.5%) are covered by water.
