The Potawatomi tribe is the reason why the county is called Potawatomi. Council Bluffs is the county seat.
The Omaha–Council Bluffs, NE–IA Metropolitan Statistical Area has Pottawattamie County as a part of it.
The county has a total area of 959 square miles (2,480 km2), of which 950 square miles (2,500 km2) are land and 8.9 square miles (23 km2) (0.9%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
It is the second largest county in Iowa, after Kossuth County, in terms of land size.Pottawattamie County is in Iowa’s Loess Hills, and Kanesville, which was on The Mormon Trail, was there.
