Pontotoc County is located in Oklahoma’s south central region.
The population was 38,065, according to the 2020 census.
Ada is the county seat.
At the time of statehood, the county was formed from a portion of the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory.
It was named after a historically significant Chickasaw tribal area in Mississippi.
According to the Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture, Pontotoc means “cattail prairie” or “land of hanging grapes.”
The Ada, OK micropolitan statistical area includes Pontotoc County.
The county has a total area of 725 square miles (1,880 km2), of which 720 square miles (1,900 km2) is land and 4.8 square miles (12 km2) (0.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The northern boundary is formed by the Canadian River.
