It was named after Colonel William Polk of the American Revolutionary War.
The 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games were held at the Tryon International Equestrian Centre, near the community of Mill Spring.
The county has a total area of 239 square miles (620 km2), of which 238 square miles (620 km2) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2) (0.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
By total area, it is the fifth-smallest county in North Carolina.
