Pocahontas County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is in the eastern part of the state.
As of the census in 2020, there were 7,869 people living there.
Marlinton is the county seat. In 1821, the county was set up.
It is named after the daughter of the Powhatan chief of the Native Americans in the United States, who was from Jamestown, Virginia.
She married an English resident, and many of the First Families of Virginia can trace their roots back to their children.
Green Bank Observatory is in Pocahontas County, which is part of the National Radio Quiet Zone.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 942 square miles (2,440 km2), of which 940 square miles (2,400 km2) are land and 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) (2% of the total area) are water.
It is the third-largest county in West Virginia by area, and its average altitude of 3,219 feet or 981 meters makes it the sixth-highest county east of the Mississippi River and the highest county in this area outside of Western North Carolina.
