Platte City is the county seat.
The county was formed from the Platte Purchase on December 31, 1838, and was named after the Platte River. (Platte is a French word that means a low, shallow, or intermittent stream.)
The county has a total area of 427 square miles (1,110 km2), of which 420 square miles (1,100 km2) is land and 6.6 square miles (17 km2) (1.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The Missouri River forms the county’s southwestern border with Kansas.
