Pine City is the county seat.
The county was established in 1856 and incorporated in 1872.
Pine County contains a portion of the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation.
Pine County was formed on March 1, 1856, from portions of Chisago and Ramsey counties. Chengwatana was the original county seat.
It was named after the abundance of pine tree growth.
The terrain slopes south and east, with the highest point near the northeast corner at 1,319 feet (402 meters) above sea level.
The county is 1,435 square miles (3,720 km2) in size, with 1,411 square miles (3,650 km2) of land and 23 square miles (60 km2) (1.6%) of water.
