Pike County is part of the New York-Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area (NY-NJ-CT-PA).
General Zebulon Pike inspired the creation of Pike County. On March 26, 1814, it was formed from a portion of Wayne County, Pennsylvania.
During the colonial period, there was some English settlement in the area.
The county has a total area of 567 square miles (1,470 km2), of which 545 square miles (1,410 km2) is land and 22 square miles (57 km2) (3.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
