George Haworth, a Quaker, was the first person to live in the area.
Then came James Martin, Abraham Hanline, Solomon Carter, and William Cordell.
Macon County and Dewitt County joined to make Piatt County in 1841. James A. Piatt and Jesse Warner, who lived in the area, helped start the county.
It was named after James A. Piatt after he beat Jesse Warner in a coin toss.
The US Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 439 square miles (1,140 km2), of which 439 square miles (1,140 km2) are land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2) (0.06%) are water.
