The population was 496 as of the 2020 census, making it the least populous county in Montana and the eighth-least populous in the United States.
Winnett is the county seat.
The county was formed by dividing Fergus County in 1925, making it the last of Montana’s 56 counties to be formed.
The Musselshell River forms the county’s eastern boundary.
The county has a total area of 1,674 square miles (4,340 km2), of which 1,655 square miles (4,290 km2) is land and 19 square miles (49 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
