Lovelock is the county seat.
The county was named after John J. Pershing, an army general who lived from 1860 to 1948.
In 1919, it was made out of Humboldt County. It was the last county to be made in Nevada.
Part of the Black Rock Desert, where Burning Man is held every year, is in the county. Nevada Historical Marker 17 says that the county is there. The sign is at the Lovelock courthouse.
The county has a total area of 6,067 square miles (15,710 km2), of which 6,037 square miles (15,640 km2) are land and 31 square miles (80 km2) (0.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
