New Lexington is the county seat.

On March 1, 1818, it was formed from parts of Fairfield, Washington, and Muskingum counties.

The county is named after Oliver Hazard Perry, a War of 1812 hero.

Perry County is part of the Columbus, OH Combined Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 412 square miles (1,070 km2), of which 408 square miles (1,060 km2) is land and 4.5 square miles (12 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
