Hazard is the county seat.In 1820, the county was created.

Both the county and the county seat are named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval hero from the War of 1812.

During the American Revolutionary War, when the British colonies broke away from each other, the area that is now in the state of Kentucky was called Kentucky County and was part of the U.S. State of Virginia.

The county has a total area of 343 square miles (890 km2), of which 340 square miles (880 km2) are land and 2.9 square miles (7.5 km2) (0.9%) are water, according to the US Census Bureau.
