As of the census in 2020, there were 13,005 people living there.
Hertford is the county seat.
At first, the county was called Berkeley Precinct.
Around 1684, it was changed to Perquimans Precinct, and in 1739, it became a county.
The Elizabeth City, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Perquimans County, is part of the Virginia Beach-Norfolk, VA-NC Combined Statistical Area.
In Perquimans County is where the Harvey Point Defence Testing Activity is.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 329 square miles (850 km2), 247 square miles (640 km2) of which are land and 82 square miles (210 km2) of which are water, or 25%.
