The population was 2,835 at the time of the 2020 census.
Bison is the county seat.
The county was founded in 1908 and incorporated in 1909.
It was named after Henry E. Perkins, a Sturgis, South Dakota official.
Perkins County is located on the northern border of South Dakota. Its northern boundary line abuts the state of North Dakota’s southern boundary line.
The Grand River flows east through the county’s upper reaches, while the Moreau River flows east through the county’s lower reaches.
Shadehill Reservoir in the county is a large impoundment on the Grand River.
The terrain of Perkins County is semi-arid rolling hills carved by drainage creeks and sparsely devoted to agriculture.
The terrain slopes to the east, with its highest point at 3,097 ft (944 m) ASL on its lower west boundary line.
The total area of the county is 2,890 square miles (7,500 km2), of which 2,870 square miles (7,400 km2) is land and 20 square miles (52 km2) (0.7%) is water.
It is South Dakota’s second-largest county in terms of land area. Meade County is the state’s largest county in terms of land area.
