Pennington County is a county in South Dakota, which is a state in the United States.
As of the 2020 census, there were 109,222 people living there, making it South Dakota’s second most populous county.
Rapid City is the county seat.
The county was made in 1875, and in 1877, it was put together.
It is named after the fifth Governor of Dakota Territory, John L. Pennington, who was in office when the county was made in 1875.
The Rapid City metropolitan statistical area has Pennington County as a part of it. It is also where Mount Rushmore is found.
On the west side of South Dakota is where Pennington County is. Its west border is right up against the east border of Wyoming.
Black Elk Peak, the highest point in the country east of the continental divide, is at the west end.
Pennington County has a total area of 2,784 square miles (7,210 km2), of which 2,777 square miles (7,190 km2) are land and 7.7 square miles (20 km2) (0.3%) are water.
It has the third most land area of any county in South Dakota.
