Pendleton County is a county in West Virginia, which is a state in the United States.
As of the 2020 census, there were 6,143 people living there.
This made it the second-least populous county in West Virginia. Franklin is the county seat.
The Virginia General Assembly made the county in 1788 from parts of Augusta, Hardy, and Rockingham counties.
It was named after Edmund Pendleton (1721–1803), a famous Virginia politician and judge.
During the American Civil War, most people in Pendleton County backed the Confederacy. However, there were some Unionists in Wheeling who supported the state government.
The county has a total area of 698 square miles (1,810 km2), of which 696 square miles (1,800 km2) are land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.3%) are water, according to the US Census Bureau.
It has the fifth most land size of any county in West Virginia.
