The county was established on December 13, 1798.

The Cincinnati-Middletown, OH-KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Pendleton County.

In 1798, Pendleton County was formed by combining parts of Campbell and Bracken counties.

The county was named after Edmund Pendleton, a long-serving member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, the Continental Congress, and Virginia’s Chief Justice.

The county has a total area of 282 square miles (730 km2), of which 277 square miles (720 km2) is land and 4.8 square miles (12 km2) (1.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

The Ohio River forms the county’s northeastern border with Ohio.
