The county was formed from New Hanover County in 1875.
It was named after Edgecombe County Confederate General William Dorsey Pender, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg.
The county has a total area of 933 square miles (2,420 km2), of which 870 square miles (2,300 km2) is land and 63 square miles (160 km2) (6.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
It is North Carolina’s fifth-largest county in terms of land area.
