Elizabeth City is the county seat.
When the county was first made, it was called Pasquotank Precinct.
It became a county in 1739.
The Elizabeth City, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area and the Virginia Beach-Norfolk, VA-NC Combined Statistical Area both include Pasquotank County.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 289 square miles (750 km2), 227 square miles (590 km2) of which are land and 63 square miles (160 km2) of which are water, or 22%.
It has the fifth-smallest land area of any county in North Carolina.
