List of all cities and towns in Panola County
Panola County is a county in the state of Mississippi in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 33,208 people living there.
Sardis and Batesville are the county seats.
The county is in the northern part of the state, just east of the Mississippi Delta.
It is split in half by the Tallahatchie River, which flows to the southwest.
Because the river made it hard to get around, two county seats were set up.
Panola comes from the old Choctaw and Chickasaw word ponolo, which means “thread” in old Choctaw and “cotton” in modern Choctaw.
From the Chickasaw Cession of 1832, this was one of twelve large counties that were set up.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 705 square miles (1,830 km2), of which 685 square miles (1,770 km2) are land and 20 square miles (52 km2) are water, or 2.8%.
