Page County was made in 1831 from Shenandoah and Rockingham counties.

It was named for John Page, who was governor of Virginia from 1802 to 1805.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 314 square miles (810 km2), of which 311 square miles (810 km2) are land and 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2) are water, or 1%.
