It is in the Fox Cities area. The 2020 Census found that there were 190,705 people living there.

Appleton is the county seat.

Part of the Appleton, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area is Outagamie County.

This area is also part of the Appleton-Neenah-Oshkosh, WI Combined Statistical Area.

It got its name from the Meskwaki (Fox) Indians of the past.

The county covers 645 square miles (1,670 km2), with 638 square miles (1,650 km2) of land and 7.1 square miles (18 km2) (1.1%) of water.
