Orleans County is in the western part of the state of New York in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 40,343 people living there.
Albion is the county seat.
Nehemiah Ingersoll wanted the county to be named after him, but historians are not sure how the name was chosen.
It could have been named after the French Royal House of Orleans, or it could have been named after Andrew Jackson’s victory in New Orleans.
Since the end of the 20th century, Orleans County has been part of the Rochester, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area.
It is on the south side of Lake Ontario.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 817 square miles (2,120 km2), 391 square miles (1,010 km2) of which are land and 426 square miles (1,100 km2) of which are water, or 52%.
