Orange is the county seat.
Montpelier, the 2,700-acre (1,100 ha) estate of James Madison, the 4th President of the United States and widely regarded as the “Father of the Constitution,” is located in Orange County.
In 2024, the county will commemorate its 290th anniversary.
The county has a total area of 343 square miles (890 km2), of which 341 square miles (880 km2) is land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) (0.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
