The name of the county is derived from a local Native American word that means either “bloody water” or “icy creek.” Prior to European exploration and US acquisition, the Choctaw had long occupied much of this territory.
Oktibbeha County is home to Mississippi State University, a public research university and land-grant institution.
Oktibbeha County shares the Starkville, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 462 square miles (1,200 km2), of which 458 square miles (1,190 km2) is land and 3.7 square miles (9.6 km2) (0.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The majority of the county is in the Black Belt geological formation of fertile uplands that once supported extensive cotton plantations, while other parts are in the Flatwoods region.
