Okmulgee is the county seat.
Located on the Muscogee Nation Reservation, the county was established at the time of statehood in 1907. The name Okmulgee is derived from the Hitchita (Lower Creek) word okimulgi, which means “boiling waters” in the Hitchita language.
Okmulgee County is part of the Tulsa, Oklahoma metropolitan statistical area.
The county has a total area of 702 square miles (1,820 km2), of which 697 square miles (1,810 km2) is land and 5.0 square miles (13 km2) (0.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
