Wheeling is the county seat.
The county was founded in 1776 from the Virginia District of West Augusta.
It was called for the Ohio River, which defines its western border with Ohio.
West Liberty (formerly known as Black’s Cabin) was selected as the county seat in 1777 and served until 1797.
The Wheeling metropolitan area includes Ohio County.
According to the US Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 109 square miles (280 km2), which includes 106 square miles (270 km2) and 3.2 square miles (83.3 km2) (2.9%).
