Its population was 10,015 as of the 2020 census.
Perryton serves as the county seat.
The county was established in 1876 and incorporated in 1889.
It is named for William Beck Ochiltree, a Republic of Texas attorney general.
It was originally one of 30 prohibition or completely dry counties in Texas.
The county has a total area of 918 sq mi (2,380 km2), almost entirely land, with 0.5 sq mi (1.3 km2) (0.06%) covered by water, according to the US Census Bureau.
