As of the census in 2020, there were 17,471 people living there.
Jackson is the county seat.
Northampton County is a part of both the Rocky Mount-Wilson-Roanoke Rapids, NC Combined Statistical Area and the Roanoke Rapids, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county was made out of Bertie County in 1741. It was named after the 5th Earl of Northampton, James Compton.
Hertford County was made when parts of Northampton County, Bertie County, and Chowan County were put together in 1759.
The county has a total area of 551 square miles (1,430 km2), of which 537 square miles (1,390 km2) are land and 14 square miles (36 km2) (2.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
