The county was established in 1876 and incorporated in 1881.
It was named after Philip Nolan, the first American trader to enter Texas. The Sweetwater micropolitan statistical region includes Nolan County.
The county has a total area of 914 square miles (2,370 km2), of which 2.0 square miles (5.2 km2) (0.2%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
