The Beaumont-Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area has Newton County as a part of it.

As of the year 2000, it was the second-least populated county in East Texas, after Red River County, and the least populated county in Deep East Texas.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 940 square miles (2,400 km2), of which 934 square miles (2,420 km2) are land and 6.1 square miles (16 km2) (0.6%) are water.
