New York is one of New York’s 62 counties.
It includes the whole island of Manhattan.
It was made in 1683, making it one of the state’s first 12 counties.
In 1898, it became one of New York City’s five counties.
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,585,873 people living there.
This was up from 1,537,195 in 2000, but still a long way from 1910, when there were 2,331,542 people living there.
The county is 33.77 square miles (87.5 km2) big, and 22.96 square miles (59.5 km2) of that are land.
