The population was 48,065, according to the 2020 census. Bardstown is the county seat.
Nelson County is included in the Louisville/Jefferson County-Elizabethtown-Madison, KY-IN Combined Statistical Area, as is the Bardstown, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area.
It was formed from Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1784, shortly after the Revolutionary War, to become the fourth county in what is now Kentucky.
The county was named after Virginia Governor Thomas Nelson Jr., who signed the Declaration of Independence.
After Kentucky became a state, a newly formed Virginia county was named in his honor in 1807.
The county has a total area of 424 square miles (1,100 km2), of which 418 square miles (1,080 km2) are land and 6.6 square miles (17 km2) (1.5%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
