Edgecombe County became Nash County in 1777.
It was named after Brigadier General Francis Nash, an American soldier who was killed at the Battle of Germantown that same year.
Wilson County was made when parts of Nash, Edgecombe, Johnston, and Wayne Counties were put together in 1855.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 543 square miles (1,410 km2), of which 540 square miles (1,400 km2) are land and 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2) (0.4%) are water.
