Roundup is the county seat.
Musselshell County was established by Montana Governor Edwin L. Norris in 1911. Fergus, Yellowstone, and Meagher counties were all taken.
It was named after the Musselshell River, which runs through the county from southwest to northeast.
The county has a total area of 1,863.91 square miles (4,827.5 km2), of which 1,861.16 square miles (4,820.4 km2) is land and 2.75 square miles (7.1 km2) (0.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
