Jacksonville is the county seat.
Morgan County is included in the Springfield-Jacksonville-Lincoln, IL Combined Statistical Area, as is the Jacksonville, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Greene and Sangamon Counties merged to establish Morgan County in 1823.
It was named after General Daniel Morgan, who beat the British during the American Revolutionary War in the Battle of Cowpens.
The county has a total area of 572 square miles (1,480 km2), of which 569 square miles (1,470 km2) is land and 3.5 square miles (9.1 km2) (0.6%) is water, according to the US Census Bureau.
