The population was 9,153 as of the 2020 Census, making it the second-least populous county in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, trailing only Oscoda County to the south.
Atlanta is the county seat.
Montmorency County is located in Northern Michigan and is surrounded by the Lake Huron watershed.
The Thunder Bay River flows to Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay at Alpena, draining much of the county.
The county has a total area of 563 square miles (1,460 km2), of which 547 square miles (1,420 km2) is land and 16 square miles (41 km2) (2.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Montmorency County is considered a part of Northern Michigan, despite its location on Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.
